Everyone can be easily distracted by shiny objects. Advertising and marketing attempts to put chrome on everything and shine it up for us all to see.
It’s always good to have a plan and think about your important goals, remembering to keep first things first requires strength and focus so you don’t get distracted.
“Don’t Believe Everything You See,” was posted at Gail Val-Oxlade’s blog and is an excellent guide to the way most of us manage our needs, wants and money.
Most of us think in pictures. And yet so much of what we see can lead us astray. We see our neighbour’s snappy new car, flashy new kitchen, thrice-yearly vacations and we think we must be doing something wrong.
If we want to be happy with our lives we must question the things we see. Perspective is a funny thing. Look out at the horizon and you could be convinced the world is flat. That’s what people thought for hundreds of years until someone was willing to “not believe their eyes.”
Thought is an actual force. Like electricity, it can’t be seen. But it sure can have an impact on your reality. Think positively and you’ll move to optimism and growth. Think negatively and your spirit (and fortunes) will shrink.
I believe in the power of thought. If you can think it, you can create it. Some of us are more able to turn our thoughts to reality: Leonardo Da Vinci was a king of “think and make it so.”
Two hundred years ago, if you had suggested that you could leave Europe and be in the North America in eight hours, they would have laughed you out of the room. Or locked you up if you were too persistent. And yet…
Most of us have no sense of the power we have to create our own reality. I remember as a child listening carefully as my mother told me I could be anything I wanted to be and do anything I wanted to do; I just had to be prepared for the hard work.
Well mom was right and mom was wrong. I have been able to make my life what I want it to be. It hasn’t always been perfect… no life is. But I’ve been able to turn in y life in directions that have made sense for me. As far as the hard work goes, it seems far less arduous when it’s work you love to do.
Farmers call the work they do around the farm “chores.” We’ve come to see “chores” as something “to get done” so you can get on with doing the stuff you love. But that’s not how farmers use the term. They love doing those chores: ploughing fields, feeding livestock, mending fences. They love doing it. It’s not a “chore” – to our way of thinking – at all. Their chores are part of their daily pleasures. Change the way you look at chores, and the chores you’re looking at will change.
If you really want to get the things you want out of life, you need to invest some time in your own growth. I’m not talking about school: read the book, pass the test. I’m talking about thinking hard about what you really, really want and how you’re going to make it so.
