It is BIG…
Really big for outdoor pools, the Kitsilano Pool in Vancouver wins the top spot for being the largest outdoor pool in North America!
At 137.5 meters (measured in the main swim lanes) it’s more than five times your ordinary community center swimming pool (usually about 25 meters).
Don’t feel bad if you need to stop and look up a few times to take your bearings and see if you’ll ever make it across this marathon swimmers favorite for grueling practice pools.
No doubt, you will see a wide variety of people giving worship to their sun gods, lot’s of the little kiddies, as well as myriad of aqua-maniacs thrashing about in the water…
Big pool, big crowds…
The renovation was also really big!
Like $3.3 Million dollars big… This started last October 2017, and the last of the scaffolding was just removed one week before the Victoria Day weekend opening.
Upgrades to this87-year-old swimming legend included the following greening of the services that will keep the pool cleaner, quieter and provide better water management:
Going electric rather than using gas-powered pumps will both reduce the noise and fuel exhaust from the early morning ritual of pumping salt water out of the pool.
The biggest improvements are in the removal and replacement of the pool basin membrane and the repairs to the pool deck.
The new pool is better than the old pool. But most everything in this reno is underwater… so it really doesn’t seem like anything has changed.
But rest assured, this reno will add many more years on to the life of this swim legend.
Bring your sunscreen and enjoy the views at the Kit’s Pool!
